I agree that it is annoying. By default Android uses MTP for USB
connections as opposed to USB mass storage. See here:

MacOS has partial support for it but not really. ;) One advantage of MTP is
that it doesn't use any right-behind caching and thus doesn't require safe
removal of the device. It's thus a bit more forgiving to newbie users.
